The most notable takeaway here is that the leaves can be rubbed on skin to repel mosquitoes and other insects, as a more effective alternative to deet.  The berries are astringent, but they are edible, though some report stomach issues.  Most people don't like their raw taste, but don't let me dissuade you from trying a berry or two.  Sauces and jellies are where the berries shine best.  

The bark has been used as a diuretic, along with antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory purposes. Native tribes gathered beautyberry for curing stomach problems, rheumatism, and malaria. Many species of birds, squirrels, armadillos, raccoons, woods rats, gray foxes, opossums, and white-tailed deer seek these little bushes as a food source. It is a winter plant of interest because the berries stay on the stalks until picked or shriveled off for new Spring growth.
